Objectives and Functions

The WRO is defined by its Constitution as the directing and coordinating authority on international rehabilitation work, its aim ¡°human dignity for the challenged will be guaranteed¡±. The following are the WRO¡¯s responsibilities:

To assist governments, upon request, in strengthening rehabilitation services;

To establish and maintain such administrative and technical services as may be required, including statistical services;

To provide information, counsel, and assistance in the field of rehabilitation;

To stimulate and advance work on the overcoming of handicaps and the prevention and control of any possible risk;

To promote, in co-operation with other specialized agencies where necessary, the improvement of welfare policies for the challenged, rehabilitation technology and economic or working conditions;

To promote cooperation among scientific and professional groups which contribute to the enhancement of rehabilitation;

To propose international conventions and agreements on the handicap matters;

To promote and conduct research in the field of rehabilitation;

To promote improved standards of teaching and training in rehabilitation and related professions;

To assist in developing an informed public opinion among all peoples on matters of handicap;

• To supervise the paralympics effectively.
